In the late 1970's and early '80's I played Dungeons and Dragons.
Part of the wonderful experience of the game was using miniature
figurines to enhance the gameplaying experience. We would paint
our personal avatars with our favorite colors, shield emblems,
and distinguishing elements. This gave a very personal touch,
and sense of ownership to the character we invested time and
attention to. It really sucked when a cruel dungeonmaster might
callously allow us (or more probably "steered us") to certain
death....
